Press Release Body = Dallas based Pizza Patrón has been recognized as the "Outstanding Multicultural Business" of the first quarter of 2007 by Multicultural Business Council. The award is bestowed upon the business that has made significant advances in connecting culturally to employees, suppliers, or customers.
Pizza Patrón, which operates 63 stores in the southwestern United States, creates a true Latino pizzeria through signage, flavorings, and toppings. Their core customer is consists of Mexican-Americans and Mexicans traveling between the two countries on business or to visit family. Recognizing this consumer attribute, Pizza Patrón began accepting Mexican Pesos in January. The move created a tremendous amount of controversy from people who accused the chain of being unpatriotic.
"Based in Detroit and being focused on the cultural aspects of business we have a different viewpoint," says Rick Weaver, Chief Executive Officer of MBC. "Many Detroiters regularly visit our Canadian neighbors and appreciate the fact that Canadian businesses accept US Dollars for our purchases. Like Pizza Patrón, businesses in Canada accept foreign currency at a reasonable exchange rate, providing change in the local currency. It shows Americans that Canadian businesses welcome their commerce and is committed to making it pleasurable to do business with them."
MBC promotes the business practice of reaching out to the emerging cultures within the local or global community. They believe that by extending the welcome mat to growth sectors businesses create a bridge of understanding among cultures. This interaction allows people to learn new cultures forming the basis for understanding and appreciation.
Dubbed "Pizza por Pesos", the strategy has produced better than expected results. According to Pizza Patrón spokesperson Andrew Gamm, the chain has attracted new customers without losing existing customers. Sales are up more than 34% while pesos account for less than 10% of total sales. This ratio shows that dollar-spending customers are in strong support of the new policy.
"What we are seeing here is a business that has built a strong connection with an emerging market in their neighborhood," adds Weaver. "It proves there is growth potential simply through connecting to the local population by saying, \'we understand you and welcome you to our establishment\'."
Founded in Dallas by Antonio Swad in 1986, Pizza Patrón mission is "Service to community, commitment to value." The pizza for pesos policy exemplifies this mission and has now been extended beyond the initial trial period.
An "Outstanding Multicultural Business" is selected by MBC each calendar quarter. The distinction is awarded to a business that has made an exemplary connection to customers, employees, or suppliers from a cultural viewpoint.
